Is a Real Estate Rebate Taxable?

The reality is a real estate rebate can be a pretty significant dollar figure, and for that reason many people think they may be taxable and/or their agent will have to issue them a 1099.  But this is an incorrect mis-perception.  The reality is a real estate rebate is just a reduction in the cost of a home you buy, no different than a manufacturer rebate on a home appliance.  It is not considered income, therefore it is not taxable.

The IRS has provided an opinion on this subject, and determined that real estate rebates are not taxable.  You can read more about the IRS position on the matter at this link and this link.  Since the rebate is not taxable, a 1099 will not be issued to you.
