Are Real Estate Rebates Legal?

It’s the most common question we receive as many people think there is something shady or its some sort of illegal kick-back when an agent offering a rebate of the commission.    But it’s not, rebates are legal in 40 states and if you would like to read more we suggest reviewing this link on the US Department of Justice’s website that spells it out clearly.  Many real estate agents would like you to think just that, as they don’t believe in reducing their commissions.

If you think about it, the commission paid on the sale of a home is really a part of the cost of the home.  So receiving a rebate on the home you purchase is not that much different than receiving a rebate on an electronic device or home appliance you buy at a retailer (the only difference is we get you your rebate in about 2 weeks, those manufacturer rebates seem to always take about 3 months 🙂 ).

The reality is a real estate rebate can make buying a home more affordable regardless of what price range the home is in.  Under a scenario where the agent receives 3% on a $400,000 home, the 20% rebate would be equal to $2,400.  That $2,400 can come in handy to offset the many costs buying and moving in to a new home; movers, furniture, and endless trips for Home Depot, Lowes, Bed Bath Beyond etc etc.
